The Obstacle during My Medical Law Contemplation

December 26, 2017

My most memorable year will be the year 2009. This was the year when my father-in-law was jailed due to some scandals. My wife and I could not even secure a job in Hong Kong and we were forced to leave Hong Kong and migrated to Australia. This was because a private medical group in Australia contacted us and said they could offer jobs to us if we migrated to Australia. Initially, we planned to join the Australian Medical Council examination for license but eventually we did not attempt that because of insufficient funding. We returned to Hong Kong after a few months to work as a locum doctor and I had explained these in my previous posts. I did not obtain the Australian citizenship because I only stayed there for a very short period of time and I am currently still a Hong Kong citizen.

As I explained previously, I was inspired by President Obama and his focus on health care system and end of life issues especially Advance Directive. The plan of studying a Medical Law Master Degree was explained in the previous posts as well. I believed that I actually had to work in the field so as to make it happen in Hong Kong. I contacted my sister-in-law who worked in the Des Voeux Chambers (one of the most prestigious law chambers in Hong Kong) and asked for her introduction to the Chamber Head Mr. Daniel Fung. I also invited one of her partners Mr. Douglas Lam (who became a Senior Counsel in 2015) for cooperation for working in the field of Medical Law. I drafted all the necessary plans and proposals to them and visited their chambers on several occasions. I wished I could meet Mr. Daniel Fung in person so as to explain my proposals. I also asked them to write me reference letters so that I could apply for a Master Degree at the local or overseas university.

Unfortunately, Mr. Daniel Fung refused to see me despite my persistent request and even refused to write me the reference letters (even he knew that my sister-in-law worked in the Des Voeux Chambers). They said their chambers had no plan to work in the field of Medical Law. That also explained why I established my own companies to work in this field instead of working with them. It was really difficult to work on your own without any support locally but I was fortunate enough to receive continuous support from President Obama and I am grateful for him.

I am not making any complaints but just to let you know that sometimes even the one who is really close to you will reject you when you are a competition to him/her. Just be very cautious in making your decision.
